Early Life

Rakim Athelaston Mayers, better known as A$AP Rocky, was born on October 3, 1988, in Manhattan, New York. His childhood was spent in Harlem until his family relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, when he was 9. His fascination with rap began in primary school; by third grade, he had started to compose his first rap lyrics. At the age of 12, his life took a turn as his father was jailed for drug offenses, his older brother was murdered, and the family sought refuge in a homeless shelter. During their time moving through shelters, A$AP Rocky resorted to selling cannabis and crack while continuing to write rap. He later spent two weeks in jail for drug dealing, sharing a cell with Cassanova, who would also become a rapper.

Career

In 2007, A$AP Rocky became part of the A$AP Mob Crew, a collective based in Harlem that included rappers, producers, and other artists passionate about music. He made a notable entrance into the national rap scene in early 2011 with the release of his single, “Peso,” which gained traction on the internet and caught the attention of Hot 97, a prominent radio station in the tri-state area. Following that, “Purple Swag” was released, and both tracks, alongside their music videos, became instant hits. Legal Issues

In July 2012, Rocky faced a lawsuit for allegedly assaulting a man after witnessing him using drugs in a NYC clothing store. Following the emergence of photos from the incident, he was arrested for assault but later reached a plea deal.

On August 31, 2014, A$AP Rocky was charged with misdemeanor assault for reportedly slapping a woman at a music festival. Although the case was dismissed after a key witness failed to appear in court, the woman subsequently filed a lawsuit in July 2014, which was settled privately by April 2015.

In July 2019, A$AP Rocky was detained for aggravated assault in Stockholm, Sweden, following a street dispute with Mustafa Jafari, who was allegedly beaten and kicked. Ultimately, he was found guilty of assault, received a suspended one-month prison sentence (which he had already served), and was ordered to pay $1,270 in damages to the victim.

Upon arriving at Los Angeles International Airport in April 2022, Rocky was arrested by LAPD officers regarding a potential assault with a deadly weapon linked to a Hollywood shooting in November 2021. His bail was set at $550,000, and he was released shortly after. Subsequently, detectives executed a search warrant at his home, confiscating several boxes as evidence. In August 2022, charges were officially filed against him by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
