Jonah first drew attention through self-written productions staged in the East Village, New York, while he was a music student at the New School. His initial ambitions did not include acting, but the success of his performances prompted a change in direction. After being encouraged to audition for “I Heart Huckabees” by Dustin Hoffman, his journey in acting began. Subsequently, he was mentored by the renowned filmmaker Judd Apatow, appearing in films like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Superbad,” and “Knocked Up.” Additionally, he featured in movies such as “Evan Almighty,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Night at the Museum 2,” “Bruno,” and “Get Him to the Greek.” He is also known for his voice-over work, lending his voice to characters in films like “Horton Hears a Who!,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “Megamind.” His portrayal of Peter Brand in “Moneyball” earned him critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination in 2011. Career
Beginning his performance journey with small theater groups in New York, Hill eventually made friends with two of Dustin Hoffman‘s children, who recognized Jonah’s talents and informed their father. Thanks to Hoffman, Hill secured his first role in the film “I Heart Huckabees.” This was just the start, as he soon took on various other film roles, including one in Judd Apatow’s directorial debut, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” Hill later landed a more prominent role in Apatow’s subsequent film, “Knocked Up,” released in 2007.
The pivotal moment in Hill’s career arrived in 2007 with the comedy “Superbad,” where he starred alongside Michael Cera, propelling both their careers forward. He hosted an episode of “Saturday Night Live” in 2008 and appeared in another Apatow-helmed movie, “Funny People,” alongside Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. In 2009, Hill contributed as an associate producer for “Bruno,” a mockumentary featuring Sacha Baron Cohen. He chose to decline a leading role in “The Hangover” to collaborate with the Duplass brothers on the 2010 film “Cyrus.” Hill also launched an animated series for Fox titled “Allen Gregory,” which was met with poor reviews and was canceled shortly after its release on January 8, 2012.
In 2011, Jonah garnered critical acclaim for his supporting performance alongside Brad Pitt in the baseball biopic “Moneyball,” earning his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The following year, he starred in “21 Jump Street” with Channing Tatum, which received positive reviews and proved to be a box office success. His next major film was Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” released in 2012, which received several prestigious award nominations, including Oscars, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs.
Jonah’s acclaim continued in 2013 for his role as Donnie Azoff in the 2012 blockbuster “The Wolf of Wall Street,” directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. His performance earned him a second Oscar nomination and he also won an MTV Movie Award. In an interview with Howard Stern, Hill mentioned that he only made $60,000 for his role, having accepted SAG’s minimum wage, but expressed that he would have done anything to be part of a Scorsese film.

Following this, Hill reunited with his old comedy friends Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, and James Franco in the animated film “Sausage Party.” In 2018, he co-starred with Emma Stone in the Netflix dark comedy “Maniac.” Also that year, Hill made his directorial debut with a screenplay he authored titled “Mid90s,” which garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The subsequent year, he voiced characters in “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.” Additionally, he appeared alongside Matthew McConaughey in “Beach Bum” during that year.
Jonah was featured on the best-dressed list of “Vanity Fair” in 2018. Reports in 2019 indicated that Hill was in discussions to portray the villain in “The Batman,” but he eventually left the project due to unsuccessful negotiations. In 2020, he was seen in a Coca-Cola commercial directed by Martin Scorsese for the Super Bowl. The following year, Hill appeared in the Netflix film “Don’t Look Up,” and in 2023, he returned to Netflix with “You People.” Additionally, Jonah has been cast to portray Jerry Garcia in the upcoming biopic about the Grateful Dead, directed by Martin Scorsese.
Personal Life
Hill made a significant transformation in July 2011, losing a considerable amount of weight. At the 2011 ESPN Espy Awards, this transformation did not go unnoticed by onlookers and media representatives. He has mentioned that he achieved this weight loss through the guidance of a trainer and nutritionist, alongside a drastic dietary change. Hill expressed that his motivation for losing weight was to enhance his chances of landing more serious roles.
In August 2018, Jonah Hill and Gianna Santos were seen together, and they announced their engagement the following August, though it ended in October 2020. In June 2023, Hill became a father for the first time, welcoming his child with his girlfriend, Olivia Millar.
