Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan, Madonna Louise Ciccone later relocated with her family to Rochester Hills, Michigan. There, she began her dance studies, receiving a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan. However, she left college in 1978 to pursue her dance aspirations in New York City. After playing in various bands like “The Breakfast Club” and “Emmy,” Madonna focused on her solo career and signed with Sire Records.

Breakthrough and Musical Career
With her initial singles, “Everybody” (1982) and “Burning Up” (1983), Madonna made an impact on US dance floors. The release of her self-titled debut album in July 1983 propelled her to fame, peaking at number eight on the Billboard 200 chart six months later. Her sophomore effort, “Like a Virgin” (November 1984), marked her first album to top the charts and was also the first by a female artist to reach over five million copies sold in the US. Over her career, she has released more than ten studio albums, including titles such as “Like a Prayer” (1989), “Bedtime Stories” (1994), “American Life” (2003), “Hard Candy” (2008), “Rebel Heart” (2015), and “Madame X” (2019). With sales exceeding 300 million records globally, Madonna entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 during her initial eligibility.
Continuing her legacy, Madonna launched “The Celebration Tour” in January 2023, which extended until April 2024. During June 2023, she worked with The Weeknd and Playboi Carti on the track “Popular” for the soundtrack of the drama series “The Idol.”
Other Pursuits
Besides her music career, Madonna has found success in acting, winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1996 film “Evita.” Other notable films featuring her include “Desperately Seeking Susan” (1985), “Dick Tracy” (1990), and “A League of Their Own” (1992). She

Film Salaries
For her role in the 1985 film “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Madonna received an earnings of $80,000. The subsequent year, she was paid $1 million to co-star with her then-husband Sean Penn, equivalent to approximately $2.3 million in today’s dollars for her work in 1986. For “Dick Tracy” in 1990, she earned a comparatively modest salary of $35,000. The apex of her film career salary came in 1993 with “Body of Evidence,” where she was compensated $2.5 million in addition to a share of the gross revenue, alongside securing her entire wardrobe. In 1996, she received $1 million for her acclaimed performance in “Evita.”
Beyond her acting career, Madonna demonstrates her prowess as a savvy businesswoman. In 1992, she launched the entertainment company Maverick in partnership with Time Warner, which provided her an advance of $60 million, along with 20% of royalties from its music publishing division. One notable release from her Maverick venture was her controversial coffee table book “Sex” (1992), which quickly sold 1.5 million copies at $50 each despite facing significant backlash due to its explicit content. Additional literary pursuits included a deal with Callaway Arts & Entertainment to create five children’s books, with the first, “The English Roses,” debuting in September 2003. In 2004, Warner acquired Madonna’s stake in Maverick, transforming it into a fully owned subsidiary of Warner Music.
Madonna has also established four fashion brands, launching her first collaboration with H&M in 2007, followed by a partnership with Dolce & Gabbana. Furthermore, she founded MG Icon LLC—a joint venture with her manager Guy Oseary and Iconix Brand Group—which is responsible for her lifestyle and fashion lines “Material Girl” and “Truth or Dare by Madonna.” In 2014, she introduced a line of skincare products called MDNA Skin in Japan, later expanding into Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States by 2017. Throughout her extensive career, she has engaged in numerous brand collaborations and endorsement agreements, including one of her earliest partnerships with Pepsi in January 1989.

Art Collection

Among her impressive holdings is one of only five paintings by Frida Kahlo, alongside pieces by renowned artists such as Picasso, Diego Rivera, Damien Hirst, and Marilyn Minter.

Real Estate
Not surprisingly, Madonna boasts an impressive real estate portfolio that includes properties across the globe. At one time, she owned six properties in London, though it remains unclear how many she retains, as some may have been part of her divorce arrangements with Guy Ritchie.
For decades, Madonna has had ownership of a townhouse in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This Georgian townhouse, which spans four stories and 57 feet in width, covers more than 12,000 square feet and features 26 rooms, including 13 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms. Notable amenities include nine fireplaces, 11-foot ceilings, a drawing room measuring 38′ by 22′ with southern-facing windows for garden views, a library, a Georgian staircase, an elevator, a double-car garage, and a 3,000 square foot garden adorned with trees, roses, and rhododendrons. Plans for a new rooftop garden are also in the works.
In September 2017, she purchased an 18th-century mansion in Sintra, Portugal, for just under $9 million, set on 5.5 acres. Madonna had previously owned a 6,000 square-foot apartment in New York City, which she sold in 2013 for $16 million, although she still retains a smaller unit in that building purchased in 2008 for $7 million. Furthermore, in 2009, she acquired a 12,000-square-foot townhouse for $32 million featuring a two-car garage, nine fireplaces, a wine cellar, and an elevator. Additionally, she possesses a 50-acre equestrian property in Bridgehampton, New York, acquired in 2010 for $7 million over two transactions.
In 2003, while married to Guy Ritchie, she paid $12 million for a stunning Beverly Hills mansion previously owned by actress Sela Ward and her husband, venture capitalist Howard Sherman. This estate spans 1.25 gated acres and includes a 17,000 square-foot home featuring nine bedrooms, a full-size theater, a gym, a pool, and a tennis court. She listed the property for $28 million in 2012 and then again in 2013 for $22.5 million, ultimately selling it later that year for $19.5 million to Rockstar energy drink founder Russell Weiner. Remarkably, Weiner listed the house for $35 million in 2018.
In April 2021, Madonna acquired The Weeknd’s mansion in Hidden Hills, California for $20 million. She then listed this home for $26 million in April 2022 and later reduced the asking price to $23.5 million in March 2023. In June 2023, she secured a buyer for the mansion at $23 million.
