After being signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment label, The Firm began working on their debut album, but Cormega was dismissed midway through the recording process. Nature then took his place as the new fourth member. In 1997, Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Nature released The Firm: The Album to mixed reviews. Despite its certification, the album faced varied critical reception.

After the album’s release, platinum sales failed to materialize, leading to The Firm’s disbandment.

Nas continued his career by launching nine additional albums: I Am… in 1999, Nastradamus in 1999, Stillmatic in 2001, God’s Son in 2002, Street’s Disciple in 2004, Hip Hop Is Dead in 2006, Untitled in 2008, Life is Good in 2012, and Nasir in 2018. He has received 15 Grammy Award nominations and six MTV Music Video Award nominations, as well as 10 nominations for BET Awards, winning two of them.

In November 2016, Nas teamed up with Lin-Manuel Miranda and other artists for the song “Wrote My Way Out,” featured on The Hamilton Mixtape. Throughout the years, Nas has exhibited a strong interest in and understanding of new technologies. He co-founded the venture capital firm QueensBridge Venture Partners.

QueensBridge has invested in numerous startups over the years, with many significantly increasing in value. The firm typically invests between $100,000 and $500,000. It receives over 100 proposals monthly from emerging companies seeking funding.

Some of the most notable successes of QueensBridge’s investments include Dropbox, Lyft, SeatGeek, General Assembly, Robinhood, Casper, Pill Pack, Pluto TV, Coinbase, and Genius.

QueensBridge held a minor equity stake in Ring at the time Amazon acquired it in 2018 for $1.1 billion. The firm earned $40 million from Amazon for its investments in both Ring and Pill Pack.

In 2019, Viacom purchased Pluto TV for $340 million.

QueensBridge participated in Coinbase’s Series B round in 2013, which secured $25 million at a valuation of $143 million. By the time Coinbase went public in April 2021, QueensBridge’s investment was valued at somewhere between $35 million and $100 million.

It’s hoped that Nas sold his Coinbase shares sometime within the 12 months post-IPO, as the company’s value had diminished to approximately $13 billion by May 2022.

Additionally, Nas is a partner in the chicken and waffle restaurant Sweet Chick. John Seymour opened the first location in 2013. Upon his first visit to a Sweet Chick, Nas recognized he wanted to be involved in the southern restaurant with a hip-hop twist. Sweet Chick has expanded to various locations throughout New York, including Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, as well as having one in Los Angeles and London.

Personal Life

On June 15, 1994, Destiny, the daughter of Nas, was born. Her mother is Carmen Bryan, Nas’s ex-fiancée, who later revealed that she had an affair with Nas’s rival, Jay-Z.

Mary J. Blige and Nicki Minaj were among the brief relationships Nas had.

Fannie Ann, Nas’s mother, passed away in 2002.

In 2005, Nas married singer Kelis in Atlanta after dating for two years. However, in April 2009, while seven months pregnant, Kelis filed for divorce, stating irreconcilable differences. Their son, Knight, was born on July 21, 2009, and the couple finalized their divorce on May 21, 2010. In 2018, Kelis accused Nas of both physical and mental abuse during their marriage, while Nas has publicly claimed that Kelis subjected him to “very hostile behavior and verbal abuse” as well as “physical violent attacks.” Their relationship remains tumultuous, with Kelis, who has remarried and had a second son, denying Nas’s assertions that she is preventing him from seeing Knight.

In June 2020, Nas reconnected with Carmen Bryan to celebrate their daughter Destiny’s 26th birthday, showing an effort for family unity.

In September 2009, the IRS filed a federal tax lien against Nas for over $2.5 million due to unpaid taxes that dated back to 2006. By early 2011, his tax obligations had escalated to more than $6.4 million. In 2012, it was reported that the IRS had initiated proceedings to garnish a portion of Nas’s income until the overdue taxes were settled.

In January 2006, when Jay-Z signed Nas, the terms specified a payment of approximately $3,000,000, which included a recording budget for his first two albums with Def Jam.

Real Estate

In early 2002, Nas acquired a home in McDonough, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, for $659,000. This residence is a 3,592-square-foot property with two bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a half bath, and a swimming pool.

During mid-2007, Nas and Kelis bought a home in Los Angeles for $1.6 million. This 3,207-square-foot residence features four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

In November 2021, Nas purchased a property in Calabasas, California, for $3.5 million, spread across 10 acres.
