Career

After settling in Las Vegas, Harrison’s father opened their first secondhand shop in 1981. This initial store, Gold & Silver Coin Shop, was merely a 300-square-foot establishment located on Las Vegas Boulevard. By day, Harrison worked in the shop, and by night, he repossessed vehicles. In 1986, the store relocated to a bigger space downtown, but, unfortunately, lost its lease in 1988. They then moved to a new commercial venue on Las Vegas Boulevard. Harrison and his father had long discussed the transformation of their coin shop into a pawnshop, which they perceived as a natural progression for their business. Nevertheless, implementing this change proved challenging due to a Las Vegas law from 1955, which limited new pawn shop licenses based on the city’s population. With over 640,000 residents in the metro area by 1988, Harrison consistently contacted the city statistician weekly, aiming to secure one of the limited pawn licenses as soon as the population reached a certain threshold. This goal was realized in 1989, when the Harrisons received their pawn license and subsequently opened the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop close to the Las Vegas Strip. They co-owned the shop until his father’s passing in 2018.
