What is Rick Harrison’s net worth?
With a net worth of $9 million, Rick Harrison is an American entrepreneur and reality television personality. He is a member of the Harrison family, owners of the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The family’s fame escalated due to the reality TV series “Pawn Stars,” which showcases the events and happenings at the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop.
Early Life
Born Richard Kevin Harrison on March 22, 1965, in Lexington, North Carolina, he is the son of Richard Benjamin Harrison Jr. and Joanne Harrison, making him the third child in the family. He had an elder sister named Sherry, who passed away at the age of six, while he also has an older brother, Joseph, and a younger brother, Chris. His father served in the U.S. Navy. At the age of two, his family moved to San Diego due to his father’s military transfer. Harrison began experiencing epileptic seizures at eight years old, which often confined him to bed, fostering a lifelong passion for reading. Attending Taft Middle School in San Diego, he dropped out in his sophomore year to pursue a business selling counterfeit Gucci bags that generated $2,000 weekly. In April 1981, the Harrison family made a move to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Career
After settling in Las Vegas, Harrison’s father opened their first secondhand shop in 1981. This initial store, Gold & Silver Coin Shop, was merely a 300-square-foot establishment located on Las Vegas Boulevard. By day, Harrison worked in the shop, and by night, he repossessed vehicles. In 1986, the store relocated to a bigger space downtown, but, unfortunately, lost its lease in 1988. They then moved to a new commercial venue on Las Vegas Boulevard. Harrison and his father had long discussed the transformation of their coin shop into a pawnshop, which they perceived as a natural progression for their business. Nevertheless, implementing this change proved challenging due to a Las Vegas law from 1955, which limited new pawn shop licenses based on the city’s population. With over 640,000 residents in the metro area by 1988, Harrison consistently contacted the city statistician weekly, aiming to secure one of the limited pawn licenses as soon as the population reached a certain threshold. This goal was realized in 1989, when the Harrisons received their pawn license and subsequently opened the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop close to the Las Vegas Strip. They co-owned the shop until his father’s passing in 2018.
By 2005, Harrison and his father were issuing approximately $3 million in loans annually, resulting in around $700,000 in income derived from the interest. The pawnshop gained notoriety for its unique sports memorabilia by 2006, becoming a refuge for gamblers needing cash to return home.
After his shop was featured in a 2001 PBS documentary and later appeared on Comedy Central’s Insomniac with Dave Attell in 2003, Harrison spent four years advocating for a television series based on their pawnshop. Initially considered by HBO and YouTube, the concept eventually caught the attention of the History Channel, leading to the creation of Pawn Stars, now recognized as the highest-rated show on the network. Premiering in July 2009, as of June 2023, Pawn Stars has aired for 21 seasons, comprising 633 episodes. The show stands as the most popular program on The History Channel, with renewals occurring in atypical batches of 80 episodes due to its immense popularity.
For any television show, especially a reality series, this is a significant milestone.
Currently, Rick’s son Corey Harrison works alongside his childhood best friend Austin “Chumlee” Russell in the store, both appearing on the show. Rick has earned the nickname “The Spotter” due to his sharp eye for spotting undervalued items.
Personal Life
At the age of 17, Harrison’s girlfriend Kim became pregnant. Although they experienced a miscarriage, the couple chose to marry. Their first child, Corey, entered the world on April 27, 1983, followed by their second child, Adam, two years later. Shortly after Adam’s arrival, the marriage between Harrison and Kim ended.
Just nine months after separating from Kim, Harrison met his future second wife, Tracy, during a blind double date. After six months of dating, they began living together, and eight months later, they married, taking on the responsibility of raising Corey and Adam. Eventually, they divorced.
In the year 2012, after going through two divorces, Harrison announced his engagement to Deanna Burditt, who also had been divorced twice. The couple tied the knot on July 21, 2013, in Laguna Beach, California, but their marriage ended in September 2020. In 2021, Harrison entered into marriage with Amanda Palmer.
Rick Harrison has shown interest in political matters, contemplating a run for governor of Nevada in 2022 and considering a bid for the U.S. Senate in 2024.
Lawsuit
Following the death of Richard Harrison, known as “The Old Man,” in 2018, Rick’s mother, Joanne, initiated a lawsuit contesting family asset distribution and the ownership of their Las Vegas pawn shop. She claims that during her hospitalization in 2000/2001, Rick convinced her to sign over her 51% stake in the business. The suit alleges that upon Richard’s death in 2018, Joanne inherited his 49% interest in the pawn shop, yet Rick failed to provide her with complete financial records. Additionally, Joanne asserts she has been unable to obtain an accurate accounting of over $500,000 in cash and silver she believes were accumulated by her husband prior to his passing. Joanne Harrison is seeking unspecified damages, a full accounting of assets, and a court order prohibiting Rick Harrison from using her funds while also establishing a “constructive trust” over her property.
Real Estate
In 2019, Harrison put up his Red Rock Country Clubhouse for sale in Summerlin, Las Vegas, with a listing price of $3.99 million. This 8,845-square-foot residence, constructed in 2001, was purchased by him in 2016, and he invested around $600,000 in renovations. The formal sitting room features an acid-washed granite floor, cut into planks and laid like hardwood, costing $45,000. The property includes two bedrooms on the main level and another two above, along with a gym that can serve as an additional bedroom. Seven bathrooms, a 12-seat home theater with a 150-inch screen and a curtain, and a wine cellar that accommodates over 1,000 bottles enhance the home’s appeal. An elevator and a central sound system allow music to be played from any room via a phone.
The house overlooks Red Rock Canyon’s Spring Mountains, while the backyard offers views of the Strip and the Arroyo Golf Club. The upstairs game room boasts a balcony at the rear of the house. The backyard features a lagoon-style pool, an elevated spa, and a gate that accesses the golf course, complete with a 10-foot waterfall and a lazy river flowing into the pool. An outdoor kitchen is also present. Harrison selected this neighborhood as their children attended high school nearby, but with the kids now grown, the space is no longer necessary.
