Early Life

Born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, Susan Magdalane Boyle is the youngest among nine siblings, having four brothers and four sisters. Her father, Patrick, a WWII veteran, worked as a miner, while her mother, Bridget, was a shorthand typist and an occasional singer at a venue known as Bishop’s Blaize. During her childhood, Boyle faced bullying and believed she suffered from a learning disability due to a challenging birth that caused her to be deprived of oxygen. However, as an adult, she discovered that she had been misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome alongside an “above average” IQ. Although she struggled in school, achieving few qualifications, she did take singing lessons from vocal coach Fred O’Neil and enrolled at the Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, Boyle invested her personal savings into producing a professionally cut demo, which she distributed to record labels, radio talent competitions, and TV networks, both local and national. The demo featured her performances of “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Following her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent,” these tracks were later made available online. Other early works of Boyle found their way to the internet after her television debut on “Britain’s Got Talent,” including her rendition of “Cry Me a River” on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” which she contributed to in 1999.
